Berto's Cuisine

Last Saturday, I had brunch at Berto's Cuisine (Mississauga, Ontario), a family-run restaurant that serves Filipino food.

The wooden spoon and fork hanging on the wall is a Filipino household tradition that symbolizes health and prosperity. The spoon and fork are usually oversized, but Berto's utensils were about the size of a spatula.

Puto Pao is a steamed rice bun with meat filling.

My Tapisolog consisted of beef, fried rice, egg, tomato and atsara (papaya relish).

The Filipino version of bubble tea: Special Sago at Gulaman.
A refreshing beverage made of tapioca beads, jelly. brown sugar syrup and water.

Berto's reasonably-priced food was delicious, and their service was excellent!
Berto's Cuisine is a wonderful addition to the restaurant scene in the greater Toronto area.

  1. Happy April, Margie! I never knew about that Filipino tradition. I had an oversized fork and spoon hanging in my kitchen for years. It was very much in vogue here a number of years ago. I still have them somewhere and I had planned to paint them white. I will probably come across them when we're packing up to move, if that ever happens! We've been planning to sell for a couple of years but now another wrench has been thrown into our plan with my surgeries. I guess when it's meant to happen, it will. Your meal looks interesting and those rice buns look good. Actually, everything looks good! Unfortunately, there's not a thing on your plate that I could eat right now but I could have the tea. :-) Glad you enjoyed your lunch!

  4. Hi Margie, I like reasonably priced family run restaurant that serve "down to earth" food. This one seems to fit the bill. I would have loved to try the Puto Pao :-)!

  14. Margie, that looks delicious. When I was a teenager we had a Filipino neighbor who was a chef, but not in a Filipino restaurant. We would have had to drive to a larger city to find one of those. I must try it soon!

  19. The food sounds delicious and I supposed Filipino food does have a bit of similarity with what I would have especially where there's rice. Afterall we are on the same continent.
